About Us, About Surplus
Welcome to Berkeley Surplus Online. We have been selling surplus in Berkeley, California since 1954, and now we are able (just barely) to bring Issue Military gear to the Internet. Surplus merchandise, especially that of the U.S. Military, is widely renowned for it's quality, strength, durability and value. The surplus business has become a worldwide operation. Gone are the old days when the only surplus available was U.S., and had to be bought at government auctions or through middlemen. Now, with access to dealers all over the globe, we can bring all kinds of international surplus to the marketplace.
Most of our international surplus comes from Europe. Surplus from Sweden, Switzerland and former West Germany can be of the highest quality, while that of the former U.S.S.R. and other Eastern Block countries explains, in part, why Communism failed. With a complete lack of competition, merchandise from this era is often made of cheap materials. However, there are some classic items to be found at great prices.
The nature of military surplus means availability and/or sizes may be limited. Certain items will come and go, such as the flier's goggles of the '30's and '50's, and leather bandoliers from W.W.I. Some items are still available from times past, such as the British 1937 pattern web gear (there just happened to be a lot manufactured). Still, others like the NATO rucksack and Dutch pant, for example, were plentiful for years and developed loyal followers at our store, before the supply dried up. However, as old favorites fade, there are always new innovations being made by militaries everywhere.
